Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity Province IX Meeting
Host Chapter: Gamma Upsilon Tucson, Arizona October 13-14, 2006

Province IX thanks the Gamma Upsilon brothers for all the hard work they have done to organize this Province meeting. Special thanks to Gamma Upsilon's assembly coordinator, Josh Weber, and his committee (Eric Burke, Jenna Carlson, Karen Peat, Kwyn Forbregd, Amy Smorra, and Sean Ustic). Brothers arrived into Tucson Friday afternoon. Eager to get settled, brothers checked into the Four Points Hotel, located next to the University of Arizona.
After checking in, brothers reunited at El Charro Cafe for dinner. El Charro Cafe was established in 1922 and claims to be the nation's oldest mexican restaurant in continuous operation by the same family. El Charro features a traditional Sonoran cultural style and brags that its mexican food is "a taste explosion." We had the entire patio to ourselves and enjoyed live music while filling ourselves with authentic mexican food. Brothers also exercised their diaphragms by participating in karaoke.
Brothers kept the "party" going as they traveled to Trident Bar & Grill... which was conveniently located across the street from the hotel. The restaurant is named after the warfare insignia worn by all Navy SEALs. The menu is East-Coast influenced with Old Bay seasoned peel-and-eat shrimp, Maryland blue crab cakes, and "Tucson's best New England clam chowder.
Province IX got down to business Saturday morning in Drachman Hall at the University of Arizona. It was a very successful meeting as much was discussed. We were especially proud to have GCD's Dr. John Murphy (Gamma Upsilon) and Dr. Mike Dietrich (Delta Sigma) in attendance.
Supervisor Cameron "Radar" Van Dyke and Satrap Kristl Tom performed the opening ritual. In the absence of Chaplain Aaron Nelson, Delta Sigma's Chaplain, Caroline Liddicoat, performed the invocation.
Gamma Upsilon regent, Josh Weber welcomed all the brothers and thanked everyone for attending. A letter of communication from Brett Rathi (Arizona Grad, Prov VIII Supervisor) was read by Bonita Shin. He wished Province IX well and sent his best for a successful assembly. He also thanked the GCD's for all their efforts and guidance. And, he encouraged brothers to start thinking about G.C.C. in Boston.
Next, the province officers presented their reports. And, after a short break, delegates presented their chapter reports.
After the presentation, brothers took a break. Walgreens sponsored a lunch from Baggins Gourmet Sandwiches. Baggin's is proud to be voted Tucson's best sandwich for 15 years for delectable lunches in their unique southwestern style restaurants. Although, brothers were not able to visit the actual restaurant, brothers were treated to a box lunch including a sandwich, chips, cookies and a soft drink.
The meeting resumed after a relaxing lunch. Committee chairs thanked their committees and presented their reports. At this time we were officially introduced to our newest committee, the Collegiate Development Committee. Co-chair Sanaz Farhadian shared their goals and plans for the upcoming months.
Committee reports were immediately followed by a presentation (by Bonita Shin) about the new national philanthropic project, Hearts and Crafts. This project originated in Province II, and details may be found through the international website and our province Yahoo Group.
The final order of business was a discussion about the upcoming G.C.C. in Boston. After a short teaser video, a "tour" of the G.C.C. webpage was provided. Brothers viewed registration and hotel information (available on the international Kappa Psi website).
Shortly after the meeting was adjourned, brothers met in a conference room at the Four Points for a poker tournament to raise money for the Province IX Scholarship Fund. Special thanks to Jim Connor for coordinating the tournament, and Brett Rathi and Bonita Shin for providing the cards and poker chips. The winner of the tournament was Robert Mancini, aka Ty Modell (pronounced "tie moe-dell"), from Delta Phi.
The closing banquet was sponsored by CVS and held at the McMahon's Prime Steakhouse. McMahon's is an "unrivaled dining experience." The ambiance is elegant and showcases original Western art from local artists. USDA prime aged beef headlines a menu featuring prime rib, fresh salmon and lobster tail.
Awards were presented at the banquet to the following: Gamma Nu (Travelers Award), Delta Sigma (Lapiz Taquitos Award), and Beta Gamma (Fellow-hood & Brother-ship Award & Publishers Award). Josh Weber was presented a Kappa Psi Recognition Pin for his outstanding job coordinating the assembly.
After the banquet brothers traveled to Gentle Ben's Brewing Company. Gentle Ben's showcased two stories of an award-winning brewery that has served Tucson since 1970. With a "special password," brothers were given free access to the upstairs patio, which was fully equipped with a cash bar and dance floor. The night was spent socializing, dancing, and enjoying lots of refreshments.
The meeting was a huge success. Brothers are now looking forward to reuniting in San Francisco, CA for the next Province IX assembly.
