Chapter History:
The
Beta Gamma Chapter was the first chapter west of the Mississippi
River. They were installed on September 23, 1910 by Brother W. Bruce Phillip, First Grand Regent. During the fall
of 1912, they bought their first chapter house at 1349 Masonic
Avenue in San Francisco. The Chapter was inactive during WWII,
but returned on May 26, 1949. In 1960, they purchased
their
current
6 bedroom house at 1499 Fifth Avenue in San Francisco.
In 1990, the chapter celebrated its 80th Anniversary and was presented an anniversary plaque by Grand Regent Patrick Wells.
In 1999, the chapter house
underwent major renovation.
The 2005-2006
academic year was a rebuilding year, in a sense, as officers and brothers worked very hard to
update their chapter. They revised their by-laws, updated
officer/committee responsibilities/duties, reviewed risk management policies and beefed
up the pledge process. But, the work did not stop there. Their
website was redesigned to make chapter announcements and other pertinent information
easily accessible. A new feature to the website is a forum for
brothers to share their thoughts. They also initiated plans to establish new
committees. Amazingly, brothers still managed
to organize and participate in all their traditional events
throughout the year! This ultimately lead to the chapter being ranked
as
one of the Top Ten International chapters.
The fall of 2006 saw further changes to their website - a change in its
layout and more photos. Then, in March 2007, Beta Gamma hosted Province
IX's largest assembly on record.
In
March 2008, the chapter added a golf tournament to their
long list of annual events. The first golf tournament was
held on March 27 at Presidio Golf Course & Country Club.
Proceeds went to the American Heart Association.
The chapter annually visits Alcatraz, goes ice skating, hosts luaus, and throws many banquets (just to name a few). The
chapter is very involved every year in three philanthropic projects:
Vial of Life, OTC Project and Lung Cancer Project.
